Rival Sons Live Review

After Seeing Rival Sons support Lenny Kravitz at his show on the 6th of December I knew I had made a fantastic decision to book tickets a couple of months before to see them on their solo tour. On the 9th of December I went to their show in Wolverhampton at the Wulfrun Hall.

The show was a sell out and was packed front to back which was an incredible achievement for the band. However it did leave little dancing room for myself but I can overlook that little glitch as the show was phenomenal!

Starting the evening off, the main support band the Blues Pills performed a short set. The Blues Pills are a female fronted Blues Rock band from Sweden. Their Set list was pure Blues Rock with a slight heavy edge which just made it better. I personally love a female vocalist fronting a rock band, but of course it has to be done correctly. Like the big female singers of the past and present: Joan Jett, Pat Benatar, Alannah Myles, SKIN and Taylor Momsen. Just to name a few. As she performed the set she had a little grit behind her vocals which was brilliant! I will look into the band at a later date as they were very entertaining and talented, they are a band I would recommend.

We have reached the headlining act of the post! Rival Sons! Before the show started I had been looking through some of the past set lists they had performed and I had noticed the band had not been playing one of my favourties All Over The Road from their first album, and I was a little gutted. However I did send a tweet saying I hoped they would play that song and to my utter surprise the opening song of their set was 'All Over The Road'! Lets just say the smile that spread across my face was full of shock and happiness! Oh Yes my song was playing!

The sound that filled the room could shatter ear drums they were loud! Which of course all us rock fans love! The guitar work from Scott Holiday was beautifully produced, just perfect. The cords are so simple but he makes them come across so intricate and well mixed.

And I can't possibly explain how much Jay Buchanan's voice blew me away! The notes he hit when producing the proper rock scream gave me goose bumps and left me standing there with my mouth open in awe. Trust me this man could smash any note you gave him out of the park! (Metaphorically of course.)

Highlights of the night came when the songs off of the new album, 'Electric Man', 'Secret' and 'Good Luck' were played. The sound was incredible from the whole band. The performance they provided was exceptional and they just proved exactly why they have the reputation they do. I first heard of the band when watching highlights of the High Voltage Festival on Sky Arts and since then I have followed them.

As a separate highlight I need to mention the song 'Where I've Been'. This song has stuck with me since the night ended. As you probably know the day after a gig you always end up walking around work or school the next day singing a song from the previous night. And this is the song for me that has just stuck. It wasn't a full on rock song but the emotion and power behind the lyrics and music was truly moving and I feel everyone in the room that night would agree with me. I love it when a song tells a story and 'Where I've Been' did exactly that. If you have a spare six minutes please take a listen to that track as it is pure genius.

Finishing off the review I would just like to thank both Rival Sons and Blues Pills for putting on an incredible show for a sell out crowd. You truly have a strong fan base in the Midlands, so if you are reading (Probably not) please do come back in the next year or so as I would love to see you guys perform again. And to you the reader do take a look at their back catalogue as I promise you will not be disappointed.

Lenny Kravitz Review Wembley Arena 2014

Finally after months of waiting it was time to go and see Lenny Kravitz at his only UK date in London, at the SSE Wembley Arena. It was the first time I had travelled father than Birmingham for a show but this was a must!

Only a week before the show I found out his support act would be The Rival Sons, a California based band who are very Blues Rock N Roll which I love! I am going to see Rival Sons on Tuesday in Wolverhampton for their solo UK tour. For the past couple of years every time I attempt to go an see the band live I'm always either on holiday or at another show. So all our eggs came in on basket with this band seeing them twice in the space of a week! But I am certainly not complaining.

Right the Venue. SSE Wembley Arena is a mix between The NIA and The LG Arena. Outside the front is all lit up and very well organised. Inside the actual concert hall was different. The hall was long and narrow not like the LG where it is wide and long. I would definitely go again without a doubt it was great.

The first act of the night. I could not possibly tell you who he was but I can say he was awful and I was bored stiff, luckily I had my good friend Jack Daniels to knock the edge off.

The main support band of the night as you already know was Rival Sons. Kicking their set off with Electric Man off of their brand new album. The music was brilliant Loud, clear and powerful. Jay's vocals were also superb, so much soul behind his tone. After Electric Man came too a end the crowd clapped and cheered in satisfaction as the night really began to crank up. 'Good Luck' vibrated through the venue next. The old Rock N Roll sound began sending out the groove and I couldn't stop myself from singing and dancing along. The two big highlights of the set was 'Pressure And Time' and 'Open My Eyes'.

I just can't possibly describe how good these guys are. Please look them up and listen to their music they are proper old school Rock N Roll, just phenomenal. And if you are going to their shows in the UK you will not be disappointed I promise!

Right the main act!

"STRUT! LET ME SEE YOU WALK STRUT! LET YOU'RE BODY TALK STRUT!"

I think the first sound out of my mouth when Lenny hit the stage was... "WOOOOOAAAAH!" I think I actually deafened myself. Opening up the fabulous set with 'Dirty White Boots' off of the brand spanking new album 'Strut'. The king of funk and groove was back and ready to party with the rest of us. The venue was packed front to back, seated to the floor. I was on the floor of course breaking out my incredible dance moves!

As the place bounced and grooved to the funky beat Lenny paraded around the stage amongst the many spotlights flashing around the room owning the circular stage he was stood on. As the first song faded out into the background Craig Ross brought back the classic guitar riff that is 'American Woman'. The crowd just grew with energy through the first two songs which made the atmosphere just feel absolutely electric! The three female backing vocalists are amazing! The harmonies they created with Lenny were mind blowing. The whole band behind him are fantastic! Cindy Blackman on the drums always looks as if she is having a wail of a time! Her hair flying her arms hitting those drums for all they're worth. She is truly the woman you  would want to party with!

After 'American Woman' one of the greatest songs I have ever heard came through the Marshall amps like velvet. 'It Ain't Over Till It's Over'. The whole room lit up and was dancing and singing the song for Lenny, even from where I was stood I could see the shock on his face looking out at nearly 10,000 people singing his song. The whole venue was lit up underneath the giant disco balls and spotlights, it is a moment I will never forget.

The rest of the Set list just went from strength to strength

4. Strut- A song that just oozes funky music. It is my favourite song off of the new album and I properly filled my boots and danced to every beat of the song belting out the cracking lyrics.

5. Dancin' Til Dawn
6. Sister
7.New York City

8. Always On The Run- The Blues Rock track co written with on of the greatest Guitarists in the world Slash! The track just set the place on fire. Bringing his brass band along with him the trumpets sounded out vibrating loudly around the venue which were extremely loud! But if you are a true rock fan we all know the only way to listen to rock music is Loud!

9. I Belong To You
10.Let Love Rule

11.Fly Away-  Finishing off the main Set list after curfew Lenny let his fans sing this incredible song for him. "I WANT TO GET AWAY, I WANT TO FLY AWAY! YEAH! YEAH! YEAH!" It is just an indescribable feeling when he plays music, I get goose bumps every time a note rings out, he is just my ultimate Idol.

After leaving the stage at ten past eleven, Lenny began warming up his Flying V guitar for the huge finale, which all came far too soon. We all cheered for Lenny to make his way back to the stage, I would probably guess you could hear us all from Wembley Stadium over the road. The lights spun around the room as Lenny and the crew made their way back to centre stage starting up 'The Chamber'.

"I GAVE YOU ALL THE LOVE I HAD.
AND I ALMOST GAVE YOU ONE MORE CHANCE.
THEN YOU PUT ONE IN THE CHAMBER
AND SHOT MY HEART OF GLASS
THIS TIME WILL BE YOUR LAST!"

There was so much emotion in one song I never wanted it to end.

Then along came the last song of the night. If you don't know what that is already then shame on you but it is of course 'ARE YOU GONNA GO MY WAY'. And of course we were all thinking the same thing. "I will go anywhere with you Lenny!"
As the Lenny made the Riff come to life the whole crowd began to jump up and down lifting the place off of the floor! I just wanted to live in that moment forever but far too soon it all came to and end. As the lights reflected of his mirror plated guitar the room was in total bright white. I now know why he wears sun glasses inside! As the track died out and the fans applauded the greatness that is Lenny Kravitz I just wanted him to perform the whole set over again. But of course he needed to leave as he was almost and hour over curfew. Not that we care at all but his bank balance would take a slight hit.

Finishing up I would just like to encourage all of you to listen to this man's work as it is very Old School and inspired by the greats before him. Thank you so much for reading this piece has truly been one of my favourites to write as I feel like I am reliving the night all over again!

Slash Featuring Myles Kennedy And The Conspirators

What a way to kick off the last month of the year!

I am of course talking about the Slash concert at the LG Arena on the 1st of December. I had been gearing up for this show since I had the tickets all the way back in September. I had of course already seen theses guys in show before two years ago and that night was incredible. But I have to admit Slash just took this show to a whole new level! Starting off with the support band he chose to open the show...

"LET IT BURN! LET IT BURN! I'M GONNA SET IT ON FIRE WITH THE MIDNIGHT OIL!"

California Breed! Not heard of them? Look them up. They are a three piece all star band formed in California. On lead vocals and bass guitar, the phenomenal Glenn Hughes, known for his involvement in bands such as Depp Purple and Black Sabbath and he was born in Cannock! He is a Midlands boy and always will be no matter where he moves too. Next on the drums Jason Bonham! The sun of the late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham. He has also been apart of well known bands such as Black Country Communion which Glenn Hughes was in also. Finally the youngest of the group Andrew Watt only 24 from New York.

They hit the stage full of power and energy and had all the fans eyes glued to the stage. Glenn Hughes' voice was exceptional, the range he still has in his voice is mind blowing. When he kept hitting all of those high notes you just couldn't stop your jaw from dropping and mouthing the word 'WOW!' Even the Andrew Watt has a cracking voice and his guitar work was brilliant, they are bringing back the guitar solos which I love! "Work it baby!"

Even though I didn't know many of their songs, everyone they performed kept me entertained and wanting more. And I certainly wouldn't mind going to see them again!

In the interval between the bands I began to see the arena pack out everyone anticipating one of the greatest guitarists ever known! And guess what? He is a Midlands boy too! What can I say we create the greatest musicians ever known on our little Island.

As the lights went down the crowd roared to life as the band hit the stage. Brent Fitz came out first followed by the new Rhythm guitarist Frank Sidoris and Todd kerns. And last but not least Slash and Myles headed centre stage. Opening the show with 'You're a Lie' the night kicked off with a bang. Slash hitting out note after note and Myles smashing the vocal highs and lows they are electric!

Drifting straight into 'Night Train' after 'You're a Lie' gave the fans a bit of the old Guns N Roses back Catalogue.

The set list was very well thought through, the guys mixed in music from Slash's previous Solo albums like 'Back from Cali' and 'Ghost', too the old Guns N Roses songs 'You Could Be Mine' and 'Mr Brownstone'. But most importantly they put in a bunch of new tracks which the fans loved.

Highlights of the night are pretty incredible to be frank...

  1. Rocket Queen. I have never know a man who can take a five minute song and drag it out to nearly twenty minutes! No lie Slash lost himself in a mini jam session during the middle of that song. People saw the opportunity to have a toilet break and get another drink while that song played. I know dragging songs out can get a little risky as fans may get a little bored but he is Slash! He can do whatever the hell he likes right?
  2. Just for the Birmingham show Slash bought on Glenn Hughes and Phil Campbell of Motorhead to perform a Blues Rock N roll track which Glenn Hughes sung called "Back to Birmingham". The scream in that mans voice left you speechless! Truly Incredible.
  3. Just for us Phil Campbell and Todd Kerns performed the great track 'Ace of Spades' which really got the crowd going. It was such a surprise to us the fans and one we are truly grateful to have witnessed. Todd you did Lemmy proud!
Coming towards the climax of the show Slash bought out his multi neck guitar for an amazing rendition of 'Anastasia'. Just hearing that song come from the Marshall amps makes you realise why this man gets all the praise he does!

Finally Myles bought the show to a close with the much loved songs of 'Sweet Child' O Mine' and 'Slither'. No matter how old these songs get people never tire from hearing them. They are truly brilliant.

Of course for the encore 'Paradise City' Sounded out through the venue keeping fans rooted to their spots till the very end of the show. Slash darted around the stage as usual finishing the show just like it started with a bang.

Much too soon the show was over and the fans filtered out all saying what a show that was.

Well that is all from me on this one, I think I have babbled on long enough. You just can't stop me when I start. But thank you all for reading hope you enjoyed it. And please check out 'World On Fire' it is a brilliant piece of work by the guys. They should be really proud of themselves.

Kasabian Live Show review

As always I like to start a live show review with the support band. I feel it is good to give reference the support music as well as the main act as the support band are of course trying to find their way to headline big venues themselves.

Last night the Maccabees supported Kasabian at the Birmingham show and I hate to say it but they were awful, at least to my ears. Their like marmite you either like them or hate them. To me they were not good. I was about three quarters of the way back from the stage and I could barely feel the power of the set. It is bad when I could have a conversation with the person next to me without having to shout.

To be quite frank their set was sending me too sleep...

Well after such a disastrous start the countdown began until Kasabian hit the stage. Watching a timer countdown made the waiting too stressful! But it was worth it.

Blasting onto the stage with their song Bumblebee set the packed venue on fire! The whole room was bouncing from the floor to the seats. Everyone was up and jumping about to the infectious beat it was great!

Bumblebee merged into the long introduction to 'Shoot The Runner'. Serge was moving around the stage pumping up the crowd and getting everyone involved. Tom was hitting every note with his broad midlands accent which went down a treat for the us fans.

Moving through the iconic set list Kasabian mixed in the new tracks with the old creating an awesome atmosphere. Half way through the set they played the new song Eez-eh! Truth be told I have never felt a venue of that size move before but under foot the floor was bouncing!

Set list:

  1. Bumblebee
  2. Shoot the Runner
  3. Underdog
  4. Where Did All The Love Go?
  5. Days Are Forgotten
  6. Clouds
  7. eez-eh
  8. Cutt Off
  9. Thick as Thieves
  10. Bow
  11. S.P.S
  12. Club Foot
  13. Re-Wired
  14. Treat
  15. Switchblade Smiles
  16. Empire
  17. Fire
Encore
18. Stevie
19. Vlad The Impaler
20. Praise You
21. L.S.F (Lost Souls Forever

I haven't got any highlights of the night I am afraid as the whole night was a highlight! If you get the chance to see Kasabian go! They are too good too miss!

Blues Rock 'N' Roll

Yeah they were
Dancin' and Singin'
and movin' to the groovin'
And just when it hit me somebody turned around and shouted
play that funky music white boy
play that funky music right!

This week I have slowly rekindled my love for funk and early Rock N Roll music. It all started when I played James Brown's cover of 'Play that funky music'. Quite a few musicians have attempted to cover Wild Cherry's song but I feel James Brown gave it the reputation it deserved because it is such a funky song.

Taking a look back at some of James Brown's iconic songs such as 'Get On Up', 'Get Up Off That Thing' and 'Sex Machine' he led the way for R'n'B and Funk music. It was quite remarkable, setting aside the society at the time.

Moving on from James Brown I came to Little Richard. Little Richard was of course on of the original Rock 'N' Roll singers of his time. Listening to his classic song 'Tutti Frutti' whilst lounging around the house I couldn't stop myself from singing along loudly to the 50's Rock N Roll. My favourite Little Richard song would be 'Good Golly Miss Molly'. The music is phenomenal I really think more rock bands should bring back the piano in their tracks, take a look at the Quire Boys and Status Quo. They both included a piano in their music and they both have very famous Rock N Roll tracks. (It is the way forward).

Finally we come to the one and only Elvis Presley. Need I say anymore?

Well of course I'm going to say more!

Where do I start 'Jail House Rock', 'Blue Suede Shoes', 'A Little Less Conversation'? There are far too many great songs to narrow down. I came to love Elvis' music originally through my dad as he loves Elvis! Well he loves all Blues music. His famous tracks playing loudly around the house from his Ipad. I just enjoy the variety in his music, from the fast 50's Rock N Roll tracks to the slow love songs and ballads. His work is truly one of a kind and he just set the bar incredibly high that the acts of the present day can't possibly dream to live up too.

So whenever you have a spare ten minutes look back at where Rock music came from and the incredible work of the artists back in the 50's and 60's. Trust me you'll be grooving like the rest of us.

November Favourites

As there is a brief pause in my concert schedule I thought I should put up a post about my favourite music at the minute. All of my friends know I love my music so if they hear anything new they are always on the end of the phone yelling at me to take a listen. I eventually get round to it after the third time of been told. (The trick to getting me to listen straight away is to make sure I am on my laptop at the time).

So I am going to create a top ten of my favourite tracks for this November and if it gets enough views I will consider creating a favourites for the following months. So get reading!

10. Rita Ora - Radioactive

I know what you're thinking, why has she got a pop song in her top ten? And I hear you but come on admit it everyone likes a pop song every now and then. To be quite honest my sister got me listening to this song after playing it over and over again in her car. It is a great track! Brilliant if you like a upbeat song which you can lose yourself in.

9. The Treatment - Outlaw

I m not kidding you these guys are one too watch! If you listened to my advice in the earlier posts and listened to this band you will be nodding your head and agreeing with me when I say this is one hell of a rock n roll track! The bass is low and heavy, the guitar riff is dirty and the vocals are so on point they passed the point. Such good key quality's for a successful rock track.

8. Black Stone Cherry - Me And Mary Jane

Hearing this song on the radio is good, but hearing it live is electric! Ben Wells has a way with a guitar and I pray to all that is holy that he carries on what he is doing because it is working!  I love the grit to this song and the way it gets you lost. So if you a song full of sex, drugs and country rock and roll this is the one for you.

7. Shine down - Enemies

I first heard this song on planet rock when they did a Shine down trilogy and since the first time I heard it, I haven't stopped listening to it. Brent Smith really dug deep to put a metal edged spin on the Amaryllis album and it paid off immensely. All of the songs on the album are great but this one is a real shiner. (No pun intended).

6. Slipknot - Devil In I

First album after Paul Gray sadly passed away. But Slipknot are definitely back with a punch after listening to the new single. Corey and the guys have returned to their old ways by producing fast riffs, strong beats and ear piercing vocals. IT IS FANTASTIC!

5. Royal Blood - Come On Over

The new boys on the block, leading the way for new British Rock music. Royal Blood have stormed the rock charts with two singles 'Come On Over' and 'Figure It Out'. Personally 'Come On Over' is my favourite. Obviously it is in my countdown! But it is partially due to it's added edginess and heavier feel, it is a proper crowd mover.

4. Lynyrd Skynryd - Simple Man

Looking back on the great southern country rock I obviously came across this band. Putting on their greatest hits CD I began to weave my way through the tracks before hitting this beauty. I don't know what it is about this track but it is just fabulous. It is a true rock ballad, the lyrics and music behind the song are just mesmerising. If you have never heard this song please, please go and listen to it!

3. Slash - The Dissident and 30 Years To Life

Number three is a double hitter off of the new album by Slash, Myles and the Conspirators. I couldn't solely chose one they are both brilliant. The Dissident is targeted more to the new generation of rock listeners as it has a modern twist and sounds more commercial. Whereas 30 Years To Life is truer to Slash's sound, traditional hard rock!

2. Vintage Trouble - Pelvis Pusher

Vintage Trouble are a American band who produce 50's style rock n roll. Inspiration is taken from the likes of Elvis, Chuck Berry, James brown and Little Richard. I absolutely love listening to this music as it shows me where rock music originated from and who my favourite bands aspired to be like and took inspiration from. This track is a feel good track, it makes you want to get up and dance around like nobody is watching! Just writing about it makes me want to listen right now!

1. AC/DC -Play Ball

Yes ladies and gentlemen they're back! Brian Johnson and Angus young are back fighting fit giving us a look into their newest album. This single just oozes Classic Rock. The blues cords from Angus' guitar and the raspy vocals from Johnson sets off an atomic bomb like feel in the gut. Play Ball is meant to be played in the arenas across the globe and fingers crossed they bring it to the UK!

Well they're my top ten November Favourites and by gosh they're good right?
If you have any new music you want me to listen too and give a review please leave a note in the comments and I will surely take a look.

Just to finish I would like to say a huge thank you to you the readers as each time my views go up it gives me a huge boost and the inspiration to keep writing and keep you entertained with my constant babble!

Live Shows Part 5

As crazy season has started with one gig after another I haven't had the time to finish off posting about my past live show experiences, so here is the final hurdle!

Firstly comes three bands that I had the pleasure to see on my birthday back in April! They were of course, FM, Europe and Foreigner. I know all of you went to this tour are thinking the same thing, it was incredible!

Kicking off the night was FM, they came out to a full house of fans who were waiting to be entertained, no pressure. But I have to say their reputation proceeds them, they were really good exactly what I expected of them.

They started their short set with Tough Love, the newest song of the group. The vocals from Steve Overland were clean and powerful increasing the level of the performance. Also the Guitar work from Jim Kirkpatrick was spot on, We are unfortunately losing guitar solos with new music but these guys are keeping them alive.

BRING BACK GUITAR SOLOS!

The band also played:

  •  I belong to the night
  •  Don't stop
  • Closer to heaven
  • That girl
  • Crosstown Train
  • Burning my heart down
Much to soon the set was over leaving us all waiting for the next band to arrive on stage the mighty Europe!

Hitting the stage with their brand new song 'Riches To Rags' Europe charged onto the stage like a wrecking ball! Their set was dirty, hot and heavy, full to the brim with iconic songs.

Joey Tempest the lead singer of the band hit all his notes low and high, his voice sounding straight out of the 80's. He interacted with the crowd which was buzzing with energy, cracking jokes and keeping the mood light but the music heavy!

Their twelve song set list included:
  • Firebox
  • Superstitious
  • Let the good times rock
  • no stone unturned
  • Carrie
  • Scream of anger
  • Sign of the times
  • Cherokee
  • Rock the night
  • Last look of Eden
And of course the final song was The Final Countdown! I mean if they didn't play that song the fans were sure to have rioted 'Metaphorically'. My favourite moments during gigs is when the whole crowd know a song and they sing it all together leaving the band looking impressed and not having to sing due to the sheer volume coming from the fans.

As an overview of the set, it was brilliant. The set list had everything you could of asked for, hard rocking songs which got the crowd jumping all the way too the ballads which slowed the pace down but still having a big impact within the show it was excellent.

To the headlining act of the night Foreigner!

Opening the set to a sold out venue Foreigner hit the stage with 'Double Vision'. The lights shot out and skimmed over the vast crowd, while the spot lights landed on the band.

'Feeling down 'n' dirty, feeling kinda mean' was all it took to get the crowd going. I of course among many others was belting out the lyrics and dancing around like no one was watching. Which of course is who you're supposed to dance.

Double vision drifted into head games and Cold as Ice, a classic song among Foreigner fans. To tell the truth I had never heard a group of people sing one song so loudly it was really moving.

The set list then took a slow turn moving into 'Waiting for a girl like you'. It was one of my favourite songs of the night, as not only was the vocals and music spot on the staging and lighting that went with everything blew me away. The set couldn't have been better if they tried it was really fitting.

Another highlight of the night was of course when they played 'Dirty White Boy'. I love me some straight hitting rock n roll.

Kelly Hansen's vocal work was phenomenal, even though he wasn't the original singer back for some of the original Foreigner hits, he didn't half do the song justice. Especially in 'Feels like the first time' the high notes and ranges he needed to hit were smashed.

Then onto the great Mick Jones on the lead guitar. As you know from reading my earlier blog posts I do like a good guitar solo and who better to perform them then the bands who created them. I think that is why I am so drawn to older music. It is the work behind each track musically. The way he can just work his way around a guitar and produce such great iconic sounds is truly genius. And he is English too so it just makes the fans prouder.

'Jukebox Hero' is there really anymore I need to say?

Well I will anyway as it was a song I was waiting for all night! As soon as the keyboard started up and the lights went down I was in the zone. If only I was up on that stage too, I would have rocked the air guitar and vocals! (I can dream). The song is just pure genius and no matter how old the song gets it will never be forgotten it will live on and always be remembered which is also what I like about old rock and heavy metal it sticks, you never forget it unlike the songs of the 21st Century.

Finishing off with the encore, Foreigner invited up both FM and Europe onto the stage to perform 'I wanna Know What Love Is.' The atmosphere in the room just changed when the song started. The song hits you like all the other Rock Ballads that are written, straight in the chest.

Well that is all I have left to say about the night other than the fact it was possibly the best birthday celebration I have ever had!

Thank you all for reading once again it is much appreciated!

Motörhead Birmingham live show review

"EVERYTHING
LOUDER
THAN
EVERYTHING
ELSE"

That is the Motorhead way!

Starting off the night with a bottle of Becks and the purchase of the traditional Motorhead war pig tour T shirt I was fully prepared for the night a head. The night started off with the first support band The Bosshoss. For those of you who have not heard of these guys they are a seven piece country rock band from Berlin. As soon as they hit the stage they brought the power, energy and pure Rock!

They used a wide range of instruments from the basic guitars, drums and vocals to bringing in Harmonicas, double bass, wash board, trumpets and trombones, it was sheer unique brilliance. They played a bunch of songs that were great for building up the crowd and getting them to interact with the band.

Finally even though this was the first time I had ever seen or heard of them they did finish up with a cover of 'Word Up!' The country twist and break downs were fantastic! I would really love to go and see them again, Fingers crossed it'll be soon, as they are a band I will not forget in a hurry and I personally suggest you go and check them out. They were and are epic!

Second on the bill was The Damned, British rock band from the seventies lead by Dave Vanian and now guitarist Captain Sensible. The band came out with a punch, I will admit I have never really listened to The Damned that much so I am basing my opinion solely on Thursday nights performance.

The songs they performed were well taken by the fans in the venue who were cheering on their icons as their set rolled on. The stage work and lighting was phenomenal, it helped make the performance. To finish the set they did of course play 'Smash It Up'. One of the songs I did actually know which was great!

Both support bands were absolutely fantastic and I think Motorhead made a great choice in picking them specifically for the tour as they opened the night up, getting all the fans ready and pumped up ready for the headliners which we were all anticipating  for after the disappointing cancellation of their last UK tour earlier in the year.

Finally we come to our head lining act. Ten minutes before the show started and the final music checks were been made you could feel the atmosphere beginning to build. Also the volume coming from the amps as they warmed up just gave you a warning what you were about to be hit with because by god did those amps shake the room when the first song rang out.

You just can't begin to comprehend the sheer volume that floods a venue when Motorhead hit the stage, you have to be their to experience it for yourself.

The band pulled out some iconic songs such as, Dr Rock, Rock it, Overkill and of course Ace of Spades. The music was spot on, all the riffs were clean and clear. Lemmy's vocals were superb! His voice hasn't changed a single bit, still gruff and menacing as ever.

The band interacted with the crowd excellently cracking jokes and producing witty comments which left us all chuckling with laughter.

My highlights of the night:

Mikkey Dee left the crowd watching on in awe as he worked his way expertly round his giant drum kit, hitting out rhythm after rhythm in and out of his solo's. But his solo was immense! His still blonde hair was flying about along with his arms as he hit out his classic loud beats. It left us all cheering for more as it unfortunately ended.

Final song of the night was of course Ace Of Spades, and to make the moment even sweeter we watched as Philthy Animal Taylor and Fast Eddie Clarke joined Lemmy, Mikkey and Phil to play the final song how it was originally. It was a surprise which we all relished in, it was electric!

And to finish off the encore 'Overkill', it ended the night with a bang! I can still hear the faintness of ringing in my ears still. I highly doubt I will ever see Motorhead again but I am extremely grateful to have seen them possibly on their last tour. If you were there too, you will agree with me it was a night you wont forget in a hurry.

'WE ARE MOTORHEAD AND WE PLAY ROCK N ROLL!'

Thank you for reading, I appreciate it immensely!

Airbourne and Black Stone Cherry Live Review

Thursday night I went to the LG Arena in Birmingham to go and see the Hard Rock band Airbourne and the country Rock band Black Stone Cherry. The night started off with a pint of lager and the sound of the support band Theory Of A Deadman in the background. Unfortunately I only caught the final two songs of their set, 'Drown' and 'Bad Girlfriend'. But from what I heard I would give them a positive review, I would like to see them support another band where I can see them perform a small set. 'Bad Girlfriend' is actually my favourite song by the band and I feel they performed the song extremely well. The singer hit all the notes and sounded good live, also the music was good.

Next came the band of the night!! AIRBOURNE!

They opened their Hard Rocking set with 'Ready To Rock'. The band came rushing out hitting their marks prepared to give Birmingham a show never to forget. The crowd roared to life, beer started flying everywhere as fans started cheering and throwing devil horns in the air. The wall of Marshall Amps where cranked up to 11 flooding the venue with the epic riffs we have come to love!

They followed up the opener with 'Too Much Too Young Too Fast' which provided the fans with the classic dirty rock sound which we all know and love! Joel and the guys interacted with the crowd getting everyone in the arena to clap along in the breakdowns as the rocking guitar solos broke out from the white Explorer.

Joel of course began to break out the booze and the sweet talk with the ladies of the audience. 'Girls In Black' filled the venue and the crowd began moving again. During the breakdown Joel told all the guys to get the ladies on their shoulders lifting the show off of the ground. Of course he bribed everyone who got in the air with beer! (I was too far back to get a beer).

I love it when bands talk with the crowd and crack jokes, it just shows they are just like everyone else in the arena, just better a music!

The hour show went by far too quickly! They ended the set with 'Runnin Wild' one of the songs off of their first ever album. I could of quite happily watched that show for another couple of hours as it was that epic! What also amused me was the amount of Airbourne T-Shirts floating around the venue. There was by far more Airbourne fans than Black Stone Cherry Fans.

When they left the stage and we went off for another pint we all said Black Stone Cherry where not going to be able to top what they just did. And to be brutally honest they didn't. I prefer the hard hitting Dirty Rock N Roll Airbourne provide. And I think a lot of fans agreed with me as some of the fans left after their set. It is just like the Def Leppard and Motley Crue tour where Motley Crue blew the headliners Def Leppard out of the water!

So overall three points:
  • Epic Live Show and performance.
  • Great interaction with the fans.
  • Will I be going to see them for a fourth time? YES!

This leaves us to the headliners Black Stone Cherry...

They opened the show with 'Rain Wizard' off of their new album and to give credit where credit is due they performed it really well they gave a good opening to the show following it up with 'Blind Man' and 'Me And Mary Jane'.

The opening songs where brilliant the whole crowd was getting behind the band and cheering. It went down a storm. But for me the middle of the show went down a few notches, they were not firing on all cylinders. But it didn't bother me too much as I new pretty much all of the songs and I was a little bit drunk causing the show to still sound good, (thank you for booze!).

In the middle of the set they performed 'Things My Father Said' and the band let the crowd sing the whole song as pretty much everyone knew the words and were getting involved. And to be honest it was a great moment especially for the band hearing over 8000 fans singing your song and you not needing to help them out.

Ben Well's stole the show for me running around the stage with his long blonde hair rocking out with his Les Paul guitar he was gorgeous! (And I think all the ladies agree with me).

Finally the set ended with 'White Trash Millionaire' and of course the classic 'Blame It On The Boom Boom'. Those final two songs ended the same way as the first four started. With lots of power and energy! Black Stone Cherry are like Marmite, you either like it or you don't and I like it but I feel they were not the best on the night, they were overshadowed by Airbourne.

Heads up! They did film the show so if they release a tour film in the near future it is the Birmingham show they filmed at.

Well that is all for this post!
Next post will be a must read as I am reviewing the MOTORHEAD show!
(Yes I am lucky enough to be seeing the greats!)

Live Shows Part 4

Finishing off 2013 with a trip to the HMV Institute in Birmingham to see the Australian Hard Rock band Airbourne! Ever since hearing 'Diamond In The Rough' back in 2007 I have been absolutely hooked on this band! When hearing them for the first time every one asks the same thing:

When did AC/DC release a new album?

Granted their music does sound similar, but Airbourne expand on their musical range they don't just stick to the traditional blues notes like AC/DC.

I first saw them supporting Iron Maiden in 2012 and the only word I can use to describe this band is 'ELECTRIC'.

Joel O'Keeffe front lines the band, running around the stage climbing up on the set and keeping the energy high throughout.

Back to the night in question, the bands introduction music was a loud siren with a airplane engine booming in the back ground. The vibrations flooded through the room, causing the floor to feel like it was moving I honestly thought we were all going to end up going through the floor before this gig even started!

When the curtain dropped and the opening guitar riff to  'Ready To Rock' came through the Marshall amps I instantly new we were in for one hell of a show!. The crowd began jumping and going wild, beer went flying through the air it was a proper Rock gig!

What I specifically love in Airbourne songs are the break downs in the centre, leaving Joel to work his White Explorer and interact with the crowd. During the gig he ended up leaving the stage and making his way up onto the Venues Balcony where he drew out a long solo which was incredible!

But credit where credit is due, I can't forget the other band members Joel's brother Ryan O'Keeffe, David Rhodes and Justin Street they each played their own individual parts head banging through all of the songs and keeping the energy high.

Finally I am eager to say I am going to see Airbourne again! Tomorrow! As they are touring with Black Stone Cherry, so I am ecstatic to say the least. So this is a band I highly recommend for any of you reading to go and see!

2014!

What a year for live shows! Kicking off the year to see the support band of Airbourne, The Treatment at the Slade Rooms in Wolverhampton (Love this venue!).

From watching them live a couple of months prior I have very few bad words to say about the group. I am happy to say they are a new British Rock 'N' Roll band, as there are few now taking on the baton so to say from the past bands such as Guns N Roses, White Snake, Bon Jovi, Metallica.

I must say I am a very traditional Hard rock, Heavy Metal girl, I can't stand the new 'So called rock and metal bands' who scream down the microphone like a five year old having a temper tantrum. I can't deal with it, it makes me cringe! You probably know who I'm talking about.

But it is safe to say The Treatment are highly approved!

The vocalist is a fantastic lead, his voice is perfect for the sound the band are going for. He commanded the stage moving around interacting with the crowd. The bassist 'Swoggle' was the most energetic within the group constantly moving around the stage and even climbing up on top of the amp stack! I thought he and the amps where going to fall on me as I was stood next to them! The lead guitarist wasn't as energetic as the others and didn't interact with the crowd much however his guitar work makes you forget all about that.

Finishing off the group as a whole sell themselves extremely well. Their hard rock vibe comes across from the opening track of their set resulting in a great up beat show. They will be one to look out for in the near future.

New album 'Running With The Dogs'

Right who is next?
'DIRTY DC'

Dirty DC are a Tribute band to of course AC/DC! Back in March I went to the rock club The Robin 2 in Wolverhampton. Thank fully they had decided to relay new carpet so I wasn't stood all night riding the invisible bicycle!

People have their own views on tribute bands, Some like them some don't. I however do, but only when they're done right. And I would say for sure Dirty DC did their idols justice. As I have been unfortunate to see AC/DC as of yet Dirty DC allowed me to actually hear some of my all time favourite tracks played live instead of through my stereo.

Out of ten I would give them a strong 9. They performed all the greatest tracks such as: High Way To Hell', 'Back In Black', 'Whole Lotta Rosie', 'The Jack' and 'Shoot To Thrill'. 'Brian Johnson' hit all the notes perfectly sounding as if he had just come out of recording the 'Back In Black Album'. And Angus drew out his guitar solos until there wasn't a note left he hadn't used.

The major highlight of the night had to be the last song, finishing off with 'For Those About To Rock'. Still dancing around after midnight, slightly drunk just topped off a fantastic night. I never wanted the show to end. I could of happily carried on watching them till the sun rose.

That's all for this part, thank you for reading!

Live Shows Part 3

2013 started off with a British band renowned for their unique sound, political views and well reviewed live shows. I am of course talking about Skunk Anansie!

Back in March 2013 at the Wolverhampton Civic I went to watch Skin lead out her fellow band members and put on one of the best sounding shows vocally and musically I have been too. Her voice is just superb and one on its own! As she belted out the big hits such as 'Weak', 'hedonism' and 'Twisted (every day hurts) the roof metaphorically blew off. The whole crowd got behind all of the tracks Jumping, clapping and singing along. But could that of partially been due to the booze?

Skin also joined us on floor by crowd surfing during 'Little Baby Swastika'. I was stood just to the left as she came past the middle of the room. After she was put back down she stayed in the crowd during the song kneeling on the floor enticing everyone else to get down projecting the lyrics 'Who put the little Baby Swastika on the wall?' It was brilliant! Almost as good as the dingy on the crowd during the Rammstein concert.

Moving on, highlights of the show! Most definitely hearing 'My Ugly Boy'. It was one of my favourite songs off of the newest album. The way she sung it made you feel every lyric of the song. Also 'I believed in you', the line 'Would you do me the favour go slit your skinny throat' is so sadistic it's moving. It sets the tone to the song and the raw emotion behind it. It's fantastic!

Unfortunately their not a constant touring band so when they do play shows you have to grab a ticket as quickly as possible and trust me you need to see these guys live or you'll regret it!

I had a long spell of no concerts until December 2013 when I went to see Avenged Sevenfold with my best friend Chloe (who I have already mentioned in a past post). I know I go from one political band to and another political band!

However Avenged Sevenfold are a much more darker and heavier sounding band which I love. I really love a heavy bass line and fast guitar riffs that get your head nodding and fists pumping in the air.

The first time I ever listened to Avenged Sevenfold was when the song 'Nightmare' was released. I was listening to it in the car thinking it was James Hetfield singing! But no it was M Shadows. That was when I first fell in love with Sinister Gates' clean guitar work that had you clinging to every note just wanting to hear more!

They also picked a phenomenal support act in Five Finger Death Punch! Hearing songs such a 'Hard to see', cover of 'Bad Company and 'The Bleeding' were like throw backs for me.
  •  For example when you haven't heard a song you used to love for a very long time.
Surprising me immensely was how good Ivan Moody's voice was live! His voice was so clear and in tune I was shocked. But it just made their set even better.

They are another band which I would love to see as a full set in the future!

Back to Avenged Sevenfold, Three words:
  • Fire
  • Skulls
  • More fire!
Opening up the show with the newest single 'Shepard of Fire' set the place jumping. From where I was in the stands I watched everyone on the floor jumping around to the beat and cheering loudly. They brilliantly mixed the song into the second 'Critical Acclaim'. For me that was a highlight of the night hearing that song played. It is an extremely political song when you sit down and actually listen to the words M Shadows is saying, it's brilliant.

Through the set they mixed up the songs performing dark metal tracks, 'Nightmare and 'Doing time' to the more emotional songs in memory of the late drummer such as 'Dear God' and 'Seize the day'. The manipulation between them all was excellent it was as if they knew exactly what the crowd wanted to hear next. And that is the number one priority, entertain your crowd, keep them happy because they are the ones paying good money to watch you put on a show!

Finally I would like to mention the solos in the middle of the concert with Sinister and the new drummer they were fantastic. As you probably know from my earlier posts I am a huge Slash fan, his guitar work blows my mind but Sinister is right up there with him. His sheer skill and talent on the guitar is timeless, he runs up on down that fret board a mile a minute and doesn't even bat an eyelash and all the notes come out clear as day. No mess ups or stutters just utterly clean music played phenomenally.

Like most bands I see I always say 'Yes I would go and see them again'. And this show was no different!

Thank you for reading guys! Hope you enjoyed it Part 4 will be up tomorrow!

Live Shows Part 2

Looking back through the bands I have seen live I have underestimated the thought of making this topic a two part blog post, I think it needs to be more of a 4 Part blog post! I really want to give each band I have seen a review and not leave any of the great experiences I have had over the last few years out.

I also wanted to write about the bands I have seen in the past as I am about to jump right back into concert season at the end of this month, and what an exciting season I am about to dive into. But before I get ahead of myself which I tend to do a lot, let me rewind to 2012.

In October 2012 I went to see Nickelback at the NIA with one of my best friends Chloe. The NIA is one of my favourite venues as the surround sound is impeccable, wherever you choose to stand the fierce sound creeps into every corner of the hall. The actual performance itself from Nickelback was brilliant. They opened the set with the new song at the time 'This means war', as soon as the music started the crowd roared and began jumping around and dancing to the beat of the track. Cleverly they blended the song out and into 'Something in your Mouth' from the Dark Horse album.

The band drifted through the set producing hard hitting Rock tracks with powerful base lines and unforgettable guitar riffs to the softer rock track ballads such as 'Lullaby', 'Photograph' and 'Never gonna be alone'.

Chad and the boys interacted with crowd very well firing beer into the fans during 'Bottoms up' and having the crowd sing parts of the song 'How you remind me' which of course every Nickelback fan knows.

But listening to some of the fans around me I heard them wanting more songs from the Dark Horse Album, which I partially agree with. However the guys did put together an awesome set list , I was only unfamiliar with one track near the end.

Finally highlights of the night were indeed them playing 'Animals' and encoring with 'Burn It To The Ground' what a way to end a great show!

As mentioned in an earlier blog post I did go and see Slash live with Myles Kennedy for his Apocalyptic Love tour. When asked if I wanted to see the show I jumped at the chance to go, how could I refuse?

Slash renowned for his impeccable talents on the guitar, selling out gigs with Guns N Rose's, Velvet Revolver and Slash's Snakepit.

Myles Kennedy joining the band formally known as Creed with Mark Tremonti to create a the new  rock band called 'Alterbridge.'

The Album Apocalyptic Love for me was okay it wasn't outstanding but it had some good tracks. You could tell Slash and Myles were only just beginning to find there feet with mixing their two sounds together. However the show was still epic, Myles Kennedy sounds even better live then on CD. His voice is so raw with incredible range I don't think there is a song on Earth that he could not sing. Taking on Gun's N Roses' songs that Axel Rose made universally known is a tough feat but he handled them with such experience that the songs sounded as if they were wrote for him to sing.

Listing only a few highlights of the show is extremely difficult, not because the show didn't have any but the exact polar opposite there was too many to trim down:

'Mean Bone'
'Rocket Queen'
'Halo'
'Slither'
'Night Train'
'Sweet Child 'o' Mine'
'Paradise City'
'Back from Cali'
'Standing in the sun'

These are the tracks that stood out for me as the whole crowd got involved. They sung, jumped, danced and enjoyed a classic show which left you wanting more at the end. But credit where credit is due the other band members:

Frank Sidoris: Rhythm guitar, moved around the stage well, didn't interact with the crowd much but I put that to the fact he is young and is still learning what to, and what not to do on stage. Plus he is on stage with Slash! The ultimate guitar hero! But he is musically perfect!

Todd Kerns: Bassist, excellent with the crowd, he spurs them on when they cheer and gets the crowd clapping to the big hits. Also when I saw him he sung 'Dr Alibi' and 'We're all gonna Die'. With honesty his voice is pretty good, he hit all the notes and made the songs his own.

'Brent Fitz' Drummer. Drummers always interest me in rock shows as I never know if they're having a good time or not because I can never see them when I am at the arenas as they are hidden behind their equipment. But Brent kept the fast beat going through the show and never lost timing once. I also loved his solo in the middle of the show with Slash.

I sincerely look forward to their upcoming World on Fire tour which I am attending, at the LG Arena of course! I will be the one wearing Black Spike Dr Marten's on my feet and pink pieces in my hair more than likely screaming 'I Love You Myles' at the stage. (Says with a guilty grin.)

Well that is all for part 2 Live Shows. Next blog post it will be the year 2013, look out for Skunk Anansie, Airbourne, Avenged Seven fold and more!
Thank you for reading it means a lot, till next time...
